So What’s Next? Downtown: Chloe Charles

Location: Gaslab

According to many, The Canadian Chloe Charles resembles a lot of singers: from Björk to Billie Holiday, Amy Winehouse to Adele and Alicia Keys to Joni Mitchell. But of course most of all, she is herself, as she has demonstrated with goosebump concerts at Crossing Border, North Sea Jazz and So What’s Next, with whom we organize this musical adventure.

Already three years in a row So What’s Next? in Muziekcentrum Eindhoven has been sold out. With a strict emphasis on the up and coming stars of the world of jazz and beyond the festival is rocking and jazzing like crazy. Would you like some proof? Here’s a list of the present artists of the last three years: Jett Rebel, Jamie Woon, Kamasi Washington, Hiatus Kaiyote, Gallowstreet, Christian Scott, Jono McCleery, Ibrahim Maalouf, Typhoon, Robert Glasper, Taylor McFerrin, Gregory Porter, José James, Jameszoo, Aaron Parks, Joshua Redman, Tigran Hamasyan and  Snarky Puppy.

Chloe Charles (born 1985) is a one-of-a-kind Canadian singer songwriter, self-thought in playing the guitar, more specifically the finger-picking style. Charles combines freakfolk-elements (like violins and estranging electronics) with an intense soulful voice. Her first EP was released in 2010 (‘Little Green Bud’), two years later her first album saw the light (Break the Balance) and recently (September 2015) her most recent album, ‘With Blindfolds on’ came out.

Charles (by the way the stepsister of Julian Lennon) won several awards with this album and it was critically acclaimed as a masterpiece. In The Netherlands she scored with goosebump giving gigs, e.g. at People’s Place and festivals such as So What’s Next? and Crossing Border (2013) as well as The North Sea Jazz Festival (2014). Her second album ‘With Blindfolds On’ she recorded in Toronto and mixed it in Berlin, the two cities she commutes between. It’s more grown up and you become witness to a lot of recent personal stuff, in her typical style which is a mixture of soul, folk, pop, jazz and classical music. Chloe, bring it on!
